Can Europe Legalize Psychedelic Therapy?

LISTEN ON:

Episode 340

Théo Giubilei

In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin speaks with Théo Giubilei, founder and coordinator of the PsychedeliCare Initiative, a European Citizens’ Initiative calling on the EU to take action on safe, legal, and equitable access to psychedelic-assisted therapies.

Théo shares how a personal experience with psychedelics led him to leave a career in European public affairs and organize a grassroots movement spanning all 27 EU countries. Together, Paul and Théo explore how EU policymaking actually works, why psychedelic reform in Europe follows a very different path than in the United States, and why patient testimony may be one of the most powerful drivers of political change.

The conversation also examines the realities of EU governance, including the challenge of coordinating care across multiple healthcare systems, the role of public funding, and the limits and possibilities of EU-level recommendations. This episode offers a grounded look at how citizen-led advocacy, culture, and public health policy intersect in the European psychedelic movement.

Théo Giubilei is a Brussels-based mental health advocate and founder of the PsychedeliCare European Citizens’ Initiative. A graduate in European Politics and Public Affairs from Sciences Po Strasbourg, he previously worked in European public affairs before dedicating himself full-time to psychedelic policy reform. Since 2022, Théo has led a grassroots coalition across all 27 EU member states working to advance safe, legal, and equitable access to psychedelic therapies as a public health issue.
