About Me:I started out my career with psychedelics in the 1970s on a hillside in Mexico, when I saw an eagle turn into the world tree, and other peculiar events. I began working with people and psychedelics in 2003, largely then with people who had taken ibogaine, but branched out into all the others as time went by. In those early days I was also doing streetside counseling with a needle exchange in the Bronx, and got to meet the full human variety.
Now psychedelics are the core of my practice, I have a great interest in the depth that our internal lives go to, and the healing capacities that exist down there. I'm also interested in the great wide doors that psychedelics can throw open, shedding light on our journey of creating peace and togetherness that we are all embarked upon. Our personal pain, our inherited pain down family lines, the pain and distress in our culture, and our shared species pain is something we are all wrestling with, everyone, and our biggest contribution to life is in doing what we can to alleviate suffering and to generate the joy that's there waiting for us. It's a big project.
I co-lead a psychedelic support group on zoom, which we call the Disintegration Group, and is my favorite group ever. You can find out more at www.afterthemedicine.com.
Description of Services:The method I use is a combination of internal family systems therapy (“parts work”) and the clean language approach, which develops our relationship with our own imagery and metaphors. Some of the time in a session we are talking just as in regular therapy, and some of the time I am inviting you to go inside yourself to communicate with your parts, as they say in IFS, your protectors or your hidden away parts that are in pain. This can also come in the form of feeling through internal body sensations or of developing imagery that, rather like a psychedelic journey, will emerge, develop and resolve, generally in unexpected ways. Is this integration? I'm not sure, since what we are often seeking to do is disintegrate our business-as-usual consciousness into something far larger and more reliable. The biggest resource we have is our own capacity for compassion and self-acceptance, and the value of plant medicines is that they can connect us with the place of love that is waiting to free us. The work after the medicine is to connect/reconnect with that place. And that also happens to be the name of my website: www.afterthemedicine.com.
