About Me:73 y.o., Many journeys with various entheogen, widely traveled in Buddhist lands (India, Nepal, Japan, Korea), about 100 silent Buddhist meditation retreats of 7 days or longer (some up to 3 months), married and deeply committed to relationship as a spiritual path, 30 years of Hospice volunteer work. In my graduate work at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology beginning in '01, Jim Fadiman was one of my principle mentors and teachers. Recently completed a 10-month training in Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy from the Institute of Integrative Psychiatry in Boulder. Currently enrolled in MAPS MDMA training (which was a big part of the IPI course). I'm deeply invested in using art as a therapeutic medium (taught classes at Esalen).
Description of Services:Psychedelic prep and integration and couple's therapy. Journeys are coming soon.
Describe my practice...whatever works. First, client safety. Then, values, what's important to the person and how are they not acting in accord with their values, and the feelings that arise from the cognitive dissonance. I often use elements of CBT, DBT, mindfulness, ACT...but always from a Rogerian humanistic place.
A guiding principle: to develop the capacity to tolerate the unpleasant physical sensations attendant to every difficult emotions, and not indulging in the storyline. Most work is done in the present moment and is not dependent on our past, observing/naming/describing our feelings creates space to make new choices. Homework for clients almost always involves meditation.
My practice as a therapist is changing/evolving. The therapy changes as I learn and grow. I usually work quickly and very directly... and sometimes we need to go slow. A typical successful series might be 6 or 8 meetings.
The work involves contacting difficult and painful psychological content without defense and for a purpose other than psychological relief, if that makes sense. Symptom management is necessary, but only up to the point where we can begin to change our relationship to the symptom, not forever trying to eliminate or control it.
Currently listed on the MAPS website as a provider for integration services.
