The documentary The Reality of Truth explores plant medicines and their potential to enrich our lives. It follows Mike “Zappy” Zapolin, an entrepreneur who made a fortune by selling internet domain names, on his journey with psychedelic plants and inner discovery.
Though living the American dream, Zappy realizes that he is missing out on something more profound. He sets out to tap into these elusive truths and returns with life-changing experience and insight. The film also features conversations with Deepak Chopra, Ram Dass, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Marianne Williamson, and more.
Once he realizes that external possessions and achievements are not the answer he is looking for, Zappy embarks on a quest to explore the internal landscape, and the hidden depths within our minds. We join Zappy as he examines a variety of different methods and studies, including Transcendental Meditation, breath work, biology, and religion, that help us tap into our inner consciousness.
For the majority of the film, however, we follow Zappy and a group of friends as they embark on two different psychedelic journeys, using San Pedro cactus and ayahuasca. We see beautiful scenes of Peru, fun travel montages, and heartfelt interviews and conversations discussing the crew’s powerful experiences. If you’re thinking about going on an immersive psychedelic retreat, this film might convince you to do it.

After returning from their trip, the crew continues to meet and discuss their time together. They talk about the profound changes in their attitudes that are so common after a powerful psychedelic experience—love, openness, connection, and unity. They are more in tune with the universe, with each other, with their own lives. Toward the end of the movie, we see that Zappy experiences another common psychedelic wonder: profound coincidence. Without giving too much away, Zappy catches up with an old friend who also has undergone a life-changing experience. What his friend decides to do with his experience is enough to convince Zappy that the universe whispers back.
The Reality of Truth is an entertaining psychedelic documentary that investigates big questions. Consider it a primer on the spiritual psychedelic scene that includes a bit of the history and philosophy behind these substances. It thoroughly examines the topic of spiritual self-discovery. It’s worth checking out if you find either psychedelics or inner-life intriguing.
