Psychedelics as Sacraments: Beyond the Medical Model

LISTEN ON:

Episode 342

Paul Ryder, Ph.D.

In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin speaks with Dr. Paul Ryder, founding minister of the Congregation for Sacred Practices (CSP), about an alternative framework for psychedelic work rooted in spirituality, ritual, and community rather than medicine alone.

Ryder shares how his own experiences led him to treat psychedelics as sacraments, and why he believes that the medical model, while valuable, represents only an early phase of the psychedelic renaissance. Paul and Dr. Ryder explore how CSP operates as both a church and a seminary, training licensed ministers to hold ceremonies ethically, safely, and within a religious legal framework.

The conversation also examines the role of community in long-term transformation, the distinction between therapists and ministers, and why practices like breathwork, meditation, and integration circles are central to spiritual development. Throughout, Ryder offers a grounded perspective on how psychedelics can support not just healing, but maturation, responsibility, and a deeper sense of purpose.

Dr. Paul Ryder is a scholar, spiritual guide, and founding minister of the Congregation for Sacred Practices (CSP), a 501(c)(3) religious organization devoted to community-based spiritual transformation and the ethical use of psychedelic sacraments. He holds a Ph.D. in Mythology, Religious Studies, and Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, an M.S. in Developmental and Social Psychology from Rutgers University, and a B.A. in Physics from Harvard University.

Prior to founding CSP in 2020, Dr. Ryder worked in academia and consulting, applying deep pattern recognition, learning design, and strategic development across government, technology, and media sectors. His interdisciplinary background allows him to bridge science, psychology, and spirituality in his approach to psychedelic practice, ministerial training, and community building.
