In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin speaks with Jean-Francois Sobiecki, a South African ethnobotanist, clinical nutritionist, and healer whose research challenges the long-held belief that Africa lacks psychoactive plant traditions.
Drawing from over two decades of fieldwork and a 15-year apprenticeship with a Northern Sotho healer, Jean-Francois explores African dream-enhancing medicines like Ubulawu, ancestral healing practices, and cross-cultural parallels with Amazonian plant traditions. Together, they examine dreams, initiation, conservation, and the future role of African psychoactive plants in global mental health.
Jean-Francois Sobiecki is a South African ethnobotanist, clinical nutritionist, and healer with over two decades of experience researching African psychoactive plant traditions. A research associate at the University of Johannesburg and founder of Phytoalchemy, he has documented more than 300 African psychoactive plant species used for healing, dreaming, and initiation. Jean-Francois completed a 15-year apprenticeship under Northern Sotho healer Leti Maponya, bridging ancestral knowledge with contemporary science through ethical fieldwork and conservation-focused practice. His book, African Psychoactive Plants: Journeys in Phytoalchemy, offers one of the most comprehensive accounts of Africa’s psychoactive plant heritage and its relevance to modern mental health and spiritual practice.
